As the weather gets colder and the camping season winds down, it is crucial to prepare your trailer for the winter months ahead. Winterizing your trailer properly will not only help prevent any damage from freezing temperatures, but also ensure that it is ready for your next camping adventure when spring arrives. Here are some steps to follow to properly winterize your camping trailer.
The first step to winterizing your trailer is to gather all the necessary supplies. This includes RV antifreeze, a water heater bypass kit (if your trailer has a water heater), a water pump converter kit, a water heater tank flush kit (if applicable), a hose, a socket wrench, and a blowout plug. It is also a good idea to have some basic hand tools on hand in case of any unexpected issues.
Start by draining all the water from your trailer`s water system. This includes draining the fresh water tank, the holding tanks, and the water heater. To do this, open all the faucets and valves and allow all the water to drain out. Be sure to also drain and flush out the black and gray water tanks.
If your trailer has a water heater, you will need to bypass it before adding antifreeze. This will prevent antifreeze from filling up the water heater tank and potentially damaging it. Use the water heater bypass kit to connect the hot and cold water lines, bypassing the water heater altogether.
Once the water system is drained and the water heater is bypassed, it`s time to add RV antifreeze. This is an important step to prevent any remaining water in the system from freezing and causing damage. Make sure to purchase RV-specific antifreeze, as it is non-toxic and safe for your trailer`s plumbing system.
You will need to use the water pump converter kit to pump the antifreeze through the system. Attach the kit to the trailer`s fresh water intake and then place the other end directly into a jug of antifreeze. Turn on the water pump and open each faucet one by one until you see the antifreeze coming out. Repeat this process for each faucet, including the shower and toilet, until you see the bright pink antifreeze coming out.
If your trailer has a water heater tank, it is important to also flush it with antifreeze. Use the water heater tank flush kit to connect a hose to the tank`s drain valve and then attach the other end to a jug of antifreeze. Open up the water heater bypass valve and turn on the water pump to fill the tank with antifreeze.
In addition to adding antifreeze, it is a good idea to blow out the water lines to ensure there is no remaining water in the system. Attach the blowout plug to the city water inlet on your trailer and attach a compressor hose to the other end. Set the compressor to 30 PSI and turn it on to blow air through the water lines. Remember to open each faucet and valve while the air is blowing through to ensure that all the water is removed.
Winterizing your trailer does not stop at the water system. You also want to protect the exterior to prevent any damage from the harsh winter weather. Clean and dry the trailer`s exterior thoroughly and apply a coat of wax to protect the paint. Make sure to also cover and protect the tires to prolong their lifespan.
After completing all the necessary steps to winterize your trailer, it is important to store it in a safe location. This can be in a garage, a carport, or a covered storage facility. If none of these options are available, make sure to place a waterproof cover over your trailer to protect it from the elements.
By following these steps, you can effectively winterize your camping trailer and have peace of mind knowing that it is protected during the colder months. Remember to always read and follow your trailer`s specific winterizing instructions, and if you are unsure about any steps, consult a professional for assistance. Proper winterization will not only protect your trailer, but also ensure that you are ready for your next camping adventure when the warm weather returns.
